Eleven-year-old SKIP is an adorable, but rebellious kid with a fascination for elephants. Having lost his father at an early age, he’s often depressed and lonely. But whenever Skip is overwhelmed, he sneaks off to the circus where he finds comfort with the elephants. This propels him to take on a summer job cleaning the stables. During a break, Skip falls asleep and realizes that one of the abused elephants communicates with him in his dream!
After the elephant, SAMBA, shares her tragic past of also having lost a parent at a young age, a deep emotional bond develops between the two. One day, Samba under-performs at the circus show and Skip overhears that Samba will be executed. Not willing to lose his only friend, Skip vows to do whatever it takes to honor Samba’s dream of tasting freedom in Africa. As all attempts to raise money fail and time runs out, Skip discovers Samba’s artistic flair for painting. As a team, they raise money by selling Samba’s paintings.
The night of the rescue, everything goes horribly wrong! Skip swallows his pride and turns to his much despised, soon-to-be stepfather for help. A few hours later, Skip and Samba are en route to Africa in a military cargo plane. They land in the beautiful country of Kenya where Samba is finally set free, but the jubilant moment turns tragic when poachers appear and gun her down. Devastated, Skip snuggles up to his dying friend and closes his eyes. Samba correctly predicts that she will be reborn as the next elephant calf in Kenya and that together, they will help free elephants around the world.
